After four votes the College of Cardinals has elected the new Pope. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany is now Pope Benedict XVI. Though I am not a religous man, I do give congradulations to the new Pope, as well as all Catholics. The position of Pope holds more signifigance than simply a leader of the Catholic Church. Each pontif works on the international stage to better humanity as a whole, a task no one, no matter what their beliefs, can belittle.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Habimus papam :D

Quite frankly, I didn't believe, that our next pope would come from Germany, guess I was wrong

He comes from a little town in Bavaria, called Alt Ötting and was a trusted aide of our former pope for many years.

I am a little ashamed to admit it, but as soon as I heard the next Pope was German the first thought that I had was "Huh, the Germans are taking over something that was Polish again".

The good admiral is right about the comment. Let's hope this don't bring bad things.

Thanks for let me know, since I have my TV off.

Well, the position of the pope has no nationality attached to it, since the pope is the head of the catholic church all over the world.

Also, while this comment was not hard to come up with, I do believe it was uncalled for. You wouldn't expect the head of this church to say something as absurd as waging a war with the whole world :P

Now, on a more humorous note and to get away from these two incomparable topics:

When my uncle got home today, he had already heard of the new pope in the radio, but the order of the news struck him as quite funny.

First of all, the minister for Swabia (or Baden-Württemberg, as it is officially called ) is named Erwin Teufel. The last name means 'devil', btw. Today he announced his retirement.

So what my uncle heard was : "…, Ratzinger is elected to be the new pope, devil has declared his retirement."

No he doesn't, but he is greatly influenced by his life expierence which is directed by where he lives. In many ways I prefer Ratzinger over most of the Latin-American ones, but on the other hand Ratzinger is much more conservative than Karol Woltyja (sp?) was.

It's pretty evident that Benedict XVI is a transition pope, he will not last too long. (Less than a decade, definitely).

I do congratulate him and hope he follows the path that Woltyja laid out for the church in the Third Millennium, that he will continue (as GAT says) to better humanity as a whole.

Benedict is a hardliner, which is not what the church needs at this point in time. he will fight to keep the church steeped in its current ways. This is not what the church needs right now. What the church needed was someone who knew enough to pick which values were worth fighting for, and which ones they might have to find a middle ground on.

Bergoglio would have been a much better choice, IMHO.

I once knew a great man. Nothing got to him, and he always smiled. May he forever rest in peace, knowing fully well that his freinds shall remember him.

I believe Benedict XVI is a caretaker for the church. I said this in basis of his age, he's 78 if I recall well. Also the he will be the enforcer for the church.

Anyway, I will give him my best of luck.

Hmm, well I don't say I agreed with every decision, that our former pope, Karol Woytila (at least I think that's the correct spelling ) made, either.

But I guess, we can all but wait and see, how Benedict performs in his new job, since only he and god will know for certain, what he will do in the end

Where did that 'e' come from? It's not supposed to be there... :?

As for wiki being highly editable, that's true. Either way there's been some comments on the Internet about the resemblance of Palpy to Ratzinger, and decided to put Palpy's pic there.

As far as the active members go ... um, I think bobandrupert might be at that age, or slightly below.

But with over 3500 registered ones and a lot of lurkers, you can never know. Despite, that this would also be there, whenever someone below that age signed up
