Just a quick question....

 

Do .AVI files have Video or is it just sound, and If it dose have video, what do you need to see it. I was just wondering.

 

Any help would be great :) ,

It really depends on the file. AVI's can have an audio or a video stream or both. And each depends on the way its encoded, so you'll need to proper codec to view it.

Codec is short for COdieier-DECodifier.

 

It's a little 'tool' that helps you transform data in both directions, the most common applications of codec in media is to compress (file size reduction), transfer (digital to analogue or backwards) or encrypt.

 

If you download a video, you might need the right codec to view it. (For instance you open a video file (AVI) and you only hear sound and see a black screen, you need the right codec to decode the video.)

 

Sometimes hunting for the right codec can be tiresome. That's why some smart folk came up with codec packs where you download a bunch of codecs at once.
