SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted April 18, 2005 SWR Staff - Executive Posted April 18, 2005 It really depends on the file. AVI's can have an audio or a video stream or both. And each depends on the way its encoded, so you'll need to proper codec to view it. kaja Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 Thanks Evaders. Sorry, Stupid question but, what's a codec? http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s152/Dave-Mastor/Cluster6.jpg
Trejiuvanat Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Codec is short for COdieier-DECodifier. It's a little 'tool' that helps you transform data in both directions, the most common applications of codec in media is to compress (file size reduction), transfer (digital to analogue or backwards) or encrypt. If you download a video, you might need the right codec to view it. (For instance you open a video file (AVI) and you only hear sound and see a black screen, you need the right codec to decode the video.) Sometimes hunting for the right codec can be tiresome. That's why some smart folk came up with codec packs where you download a bunch of codecs at once. Links: G-Spot: A small computer prog, than analyzes a video file for you and tells you which codec it was encoded with. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ The KLite Codec Pack: A codec pack with the most common codecs in use these days http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/KLite-Codec-Pack.shtml http://www.swrebellion.com/~jahled/Trej/banner.gif
kaja Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 Alright, that's just what I needed to know, Thanks Trejiuvanat. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s152/Dave-Mastor/Cluster6.jpg
