The Money Grabbing Continues

Recommended Posts

Well, if LucasArts took the same view with Rebellion as they do with Star Wars: Battlefront, we'd be seeing a part 2.

Yes, despite the failure Battlefront was after release, LucasArts is going to pump out another one! Did I mention that they're adding in everything missing from the first one? Does it really matter?

Added into BF 2 will be features such as a playable Jedi class, space battles (supposedly including capitol ships), 16 additional battles (apparently including the Tantive IV), moving the focus from Command Point capturing to objective based maps (You have to escort Leia to safety on the Tantive IV), improved AI, art and renders provided by ILM, and combat that extends into Episode III (some of the game devs have previewd the movies to assure accuracy).

There is one disturbing revalation from the article I read. Apparently development for Battlefront 2 began immediately after the first was finished. That indicates to me that LA is willing to pump out one game and drop it just to get something else done (and who makes a sequal before you know the success of the original?).

I liked the original Battlefront, but after the initial "OMG, I'm playing a Star Wars that's game like Battlefield 1942" wore off, the game got old pretty fast, especially with so many bugs, glitches, omissions, and general bad choices for gameplay.

If there is a demo for Battlefield 2 (the demo for the original was never released) before the game release, and if I like it, I might pick it up. However, this looks to me like another LucasArts money grab, which seriousely puts me off this, and other up-comming games from LucasArts.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

It's in next month's PC Gamer (which is actually the May issue). I haven't read the physical article, as that particular issue hasn't been released here yet, but I've read scans of it. They were taken with a digital cameral, so the text is a little fuzzy, but I can post the links if anyone is interested.

I can't play the original Jedi Knight on my PC at the moment because it's so old and crap. Forgive me for not getting over excited.

Makes you wonder why they released the first one at all. From what I've heard, it was nothing but disappointing, and that's not the best starting point for a sequel.

Hmm. Actually it doesn't make you wonder at all. It's clear there are enough people buying everything that has Star Wars written on it so LA could get away with any game they want and still make money off it.

Well, I don't care, I'm not buying a new PC nor upgrading my old any time soon, so I won't be playing any new games for a long time. I might get the game in a few years for 5€ from a bargain bin...

Guest JediIgor
...and let us hope a ForceCommander2 wont be coming out

Actually that would be far.. far.. better than the worst-game-ever Battlefront 2.

Why don't they do us all a favor and not port it to PC? Why must they tarnish the PC franchise when viewed among classics such as TIE Fighter or Dark Forces? *sigh*

Here comes the good old question. Will LA pull it off?

We shall see. Who knows maybe it will be great and a vast improvement.

I prefer to wait and see.

Which is a damn good point. Granted those two games are now very old and visually dated, but I still have memories of experiancing a sense of magic when I certainly played Dark Forces and Jedi Knight that has long since not been felt with more recent games, except perhaps Jedi Outcast.

It seems to me in the last couple of years Lucas Arts have been releasing games without this 'Star Wars,' feeling/atmosphere, or whatever, hence they seem to age and be forgotten very quickly...

Just a theory.

But an interessting one J.

I agree it seems in some games the SW magic is absent. Even if some games such as Rogue Squadron (console though) who came out not long ago still make me feel like i am in the film.

Emm... I actually bought a game cube just to play that game with Jedi Outcast to boot, but my game cube was faulty and I elected to get my money back rather than have a replacement (given I paid for it by credit card) ...why? Because I don't actually like the majority of consol games, and with Nintendo the choice is much more limited in terms of Playstation for example. But anyway, I doscovered two things with the brief experiance:

The first was that I prefer PC's as a platform to play games. You get to be able to mod stuff like you can't on a gamming consol; so in some respects I might disagree with some aspect of JI's post in a squaring the triangle sort of way. I found Jedi Outcast to be vastly inferior to what I enjoyed on my PC (when it worked-the good old days!), it looked crap and the Game cube's hand-thingy is simply dreadfull.

The second was why had I just had to buy a Game Cube to play Rogue Squadron II? I salivate when I see screen shots; why with hold it from the PC gamming community? What you just said M78 makes me feel I am really missing out on a damn good title!! :(

And I want a pizza... And when I want a pizza I find a way of getting one...

Use google. I found result in half a dozen languages within the first page of searching for battlefront 2

what i'd really like to see released by LA is an updated version of x-wing vs. tie fighter using the modern graphics engines.hell they could make it a twin release with the fighters from the new movies thrown on the other

i know i'd still be spending all my time screaming around in an xwing

YOu could simply get X-Wing Alliance and download models made by Darksaber and his band.

Sorry to tell you this J but you ARE missing out on a great title. When i first played it the graphics were so good that i had to impression of being in the film. You really feel the intensity of the battles. i finished off playing the battle of Endor and shouting everytime I was hit. :)

I basically bought the GC only to play that game.

*Haven't played Battlefront. Curious about it, though.

*Haven't played KotOR (Neverwinter Nights knock-off).

*Haven't played Battlegrounds (isn't that the "Age of Empires" mod? ).

*Haven't played Republic Commando. I'm decidedly anti-prequels. I DO like the ARC-Trooper, though.

*Haven't played Masters of Teras Kasai (or however it's spelled)

*Played Jedi Knight only until I got my lightsaber (got boring after that)

*Played Dark Forces only about 3/4 of the way.

*Played the hell outta X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE, BoP, and X-Wing Alliance. Not enough to want to mod it, though...(sorry, Darksaber  ) Had fun with the Millenium Falcon gunner patch, though.

*Bought a Nintendo 64 for Rogue Squadron and Shadows of the Empire. Played the heck outta RS...

*Sold the Nintendo 64 for Playstation 2, but sold the PS2 so I could get a Gamecube and the latest Rogue Squadron game. Well, and the Zelda series. (except Windwaker...{shudder}..just say 'no' to cell-shading. )

*Played Force Commander (need to dedicate a bit more time to that one...wish it was more like Mechcommander 2)

*Still Religiously play Rebellion...(duh...)

I dunno...IMHO, Lucasarts does better when they develop the game themselves, rather than mimic/mod an existing game simply to make some cash. :? The game always seems to be more endearing and memorable, as Jahled said.

I keep hearing how bad Force Commander was, but I've only ever played a single game of multiplayer which resulted in my being bombed by the AI before I could build a single Stormtrooper. If I could find a copy I would buy it just to say I've played it.

I haven't played X-Wing or TIE Fighter, but I've played X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance. I really enjoyed XvT despite the dated graphics and the fact that the lasers didn't converge. X-Wing Alliance was alright, the graphics were certainly good, but the story line just didn't feel like Star Wars to me, and the last mission where you (for some reason) become Lando rather than finish the Battle of Endor as an X-Wing pilot didn't thrill me.

I enjoyed Dark Forces, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knigh and Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith (despite the not-so-good plot with Mara), but when I made the jump to Jedi Outcast it didn't have the same feel. It felt as though the game had lost something with the new graphics

I've played, beaten and enjoyed both of hte KotOR games, but I agree that they are just knockoffs of Neverwinter Nights... although the KotOR games have better graphics. I enjoyed NWN more though (especially the expansions).

I've played and despise Battlegrounds. I don't even want to make a comment on that one...

The first game I had for my N64 was Shadows of the Empire. I loved that game and beat it on all three difficulty levels. I also played Rogue Squadron and enjoyed it.

I had a Gamecube... though only for a month or so. I played both Rogue Squadron games, and enjoyed the second to some degree.

I played Masters of Tera Kasi. It was odd but enjoyable for a while.

I enjoy Republic Commando, despite the bad rep it's getting (only 64% in PC Gamer). Sure it's buggy, but the Multiplayer is enjoyable and the SP is challenging.

I find that LA has put out a mixed bag of games in recent year, and it really depends on who the developement team is. The games based on the OT tend to be better than those of mixed or Ep 1-3 focus. I'll wait and see for Battlefront 2, but I'm going to be more careful this time around.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Am I the only one who enjoyed Force Commander? I mean, sure it had it's bad points. AI was far from exiting, and you can't build up large armies. And there are a few bugs.

Though that's about it. I thoroughly enjoyed the single player campaign, skirmish was alirght even if it had AI that resembled Red Alert (shudders at the thought of Red Alert and how it tarnished the original Command and Conquer). Graphics were great for the time it came out, and it was a fully 3D RTS. I think it's biggest down fall was the command point concept, which I liked though I thought it needed to be refined due to the simple fact you couldn't build up large enoguh armies. On the same note, that appears to be only due to system limits in those days, now the specs required for that game are laughable . . . relatively speaking of course

I still play FoCom every now and again and enjoy it.

I've played XvT and X-Wing Alliance, though felt that it was hard to get engulfed in those games. Played the original X-Wing, though all I remember of it was flying a Y-Wing in the training area and enjoying Ion cannons. Hey, I was very young back then - if anyone remembers the story line of X-Wing, could you post it? I'm interested in what it was like.

Never played TIE Fighter, though watched a mate play it a lot. Looked really good, though once again I was young then and didn't play it 'cause the Empire was evil  (Yeah I know, stupid right :P )

Dark Forces was cool, though the graphics actually made me feel sick 8O:? Jedi Knight was alright, though it lacked the Star Wars feel. Jedi Outcast was good, even if it still lacked a real Star Wars feel, it was still an awesome game. Jedi Academy was just as good in my opinion, except that there wasn't "much" of a story line. It felt more like an old school FPS where it was more about killing crap then achieving an objective, still I play it more than Outcast - go figure

Played KotOR and loved it, though never really got into playing it a second time round. Yet to try the second, and bought Neverwinter Nights . . . yeah, should install that some day. On that note, loved Diablo I, though didn't like Diablo II as much.

Battlegrounds was a real let down anyway you look at it. Graphics feel cartoonish, there's little game play. Teams are practically identicle. It's pointless to play without the epansion pack, which adds more unique units.

Played Rogue Squadron on PC and loved it then, to arcade in my opinion now. Dito for that later ones, to arcade - still want to play them though, got a Game Cube emulator for PC yet never found the actual game in the format for one of the emulators

No idea what Masters of Tera Kasi :?

Want to try Republic Command, even if I'm not that huge a fan of prequel era.

I'm hoping, though not expecting, something from the EU in Battlefront 2. I'm a big fan of the EU, while it doesn't have the feel of the original saga, it still has a pretty good overall story. Something set in the NJO would be awesome

@TF: MechCommander 2 aye? Are you a fan of the Mechwarrior and Battletech games?

That's why you still play Rebels in Rebellion right?:wink:

Of the above games:

FoCom, I tried it. Never got past the tutorial, when I decided that game was crap and decided to go no further. (Also some prob with Latinamerican Keyboards that I didn't want to fix, turned me away).

I played X-Wing and TIE and found them great games, which I continuosly replayed. (I dropped X-Wing in the last tour of duty when my joystick broke, and when I got a new one, I got it with XWA so I forgot about it.)(That second joystick also broke, my current gamepad is also in agony). I played, beat, modded, and tried to make my own Missions for XWA which I still return to. It's a great games, with great graphics for its age, and even if at the end the storyline seems a bit stretched, flying during the battle of Endor is great. (Also skirmish when Trej takes his Chiss Clawcraft against a varied mixture of TIEs).

Dark Forces || Jedi Knight Series. Not a great FPS fan partly due to the same reason Kryt mentioned...

Dark Forces was cool, though the graphics actually made me feel sick 8O:? ?

So I don't play them that much, yet I enjoyed them all... (I've yet to play MOTS and JA)

Haven't played the newer games beacuse my video card cannot handle them, I've heard good things about KOTOR, and I haven't played any RPGs so I wouldn't notice if its a rip-off or not.

Being an "Age of" Series fan, it was very boring to play Battlegrounds, Clone Campaign is slightly better, but the game's dull.

Rogue Squad was a good game, it wasn't as smart as the other flight sims, and being very arcade like. It still was plenty of fun to take down the damn AT-ATs...

Masters of Teras Käsi == Street Fighter à la Star Wars? I remember seeing that title in an old LucasArts 'catalog'...

Haven't played nor will in the recent future any of the newer games, especially not any prequel related stuff.

Rebellion, I haven't played as frenquently as I used to... And a game I've been missing is Yoda Stories... That was a ridiculously fun game for those short reality breaks...

I shall also comment on the games Krytos mentioned:

Force Commander should really have had a better Gameplay. I never managed to enjoy the game due to the camera which was very complicated to handle. The manaer you built armies was also a bit much for me.

I played XvT and enjoyed it even if i needed a little time to get used to the controls. X-Wing Alliance I really enjoyed and still play it from time to time.

X-Wing i got some time ago and didn't play much because my computer had problems running it.

I also played Tie Fighter but my joystick wouldn't work with it so kinda took the fun out of the game.

IU absolutely LOVED Dark FOrces, i liked it much more than Jedi Knight.

Jedi Outcast was okay but got boring once you gotmyour lightsaber since it became far too easy.

Jedi Academy was fun but again, it got boring since all you did during the game was hack away at Dark Jedis. The level were you get your lightsaber taken away was acvtually rather a relief.

I played KOTOR on XBox and loved it. i shall give the 2 a go once i have the money to buy it.

Battlegrounds was nothing but a clone of AoE2 but i still found it rather fun to play.

I Rogue Squadron on N64 and it became one of my favorite games. Even if it was rather hard. The 2 was just as good and also just as hard. The third was rather innovative but a bit easier (I actually managed to get a gold medal in each mission without using cheats  )

Heard of masters of Tera Kasi but never tried it

I would really like to play Republic commandos.

I hope that Battlefront 2 will come out better than the one. Time will see.

@TF: MechCommander 2 aye? Are you a fan of the Mechwarrior and Battletech games?

LOVED playing tabletop Battletech. I have many fond memories of head-shots with my favorite Warhammer 'Mech...those were the days.

Mechwarrior always frustrated me. Being a Star Wars fan and having played the heck outta X-Wing, et al, I was disappointed in not being able to truly fight in three dimensions (i.e., I wasn't flying). I kept getting my butt handed to me. However, it was tons of fun playing multiplayer.

The Mechcommander series was more my speed. To this day I don't know why it more widely accepted than it was. Mechcommander 1 was pretty good, but 2 was simply awesome! The only thing that would have mede it better would have been for you to create your own 'mech designs or to have the ability to mod the game to include the 'unseen' 'Mechs. I want my Warhammer, dang-it! :x But I digress.

Re: Force Commander - I actually like the game, from what I've seen of the tutorial. So many of the RTS games are "build units; swarm enemy" type of strategy. Warcraft III kinda broke that model due to the 'governor' of resource maintenence, but for some reason I get kind of the same feeling from Force Commander.
