Or: How finished would an unfinished Death Star have to be, to be considered a finished unfinished Death Star?

I read that if a battle takes place in a system where a Death Star is being built, then you've got the unfinished Death Star taking pot shots at all of your nice shiny Mon Calamari cruisers. Cool! But does a certain amount of MAT have to be sunk into the thing before it is operational?

In other words, if the Empire gets advance warning that a Rebel Fleet is on the way, can they start the construction of a Death Star the day before the fleet arrives and then have a Death Star II take part in the battle?

That would be pretty vile...

Put an overpowered Solar Ionization Reactor in between two cheap-ass engines and a couple of laser cannon, put a chair with a rudimentary flight control and targeting computer on top, and surround the (unpressurized!) pilot with enough armor plate so he doesn't fry in a tenth of a second... riiiiiiiiight

I'd be VERY interested in knowing the answer to this.. I've played online ever since reb. came out in feb. of 98, and I've had rebel fleets blockade an imperial planet just days from a completed ds, but I've never TRIED to make an unfinished one appear. I don't know what variables we'd have to try.. like if the shipyards are building the ds on THAT planet, since it wouldn't make sense that the unfinished pieces are hypered to the target planet.. hrmm.. now I AM interested. =o) Any1 up for a few test games? Standard reb, no rebed.. to see if we can make this happen? I know for sure that I've blockaded Coruscant with shipyards building a DS targeted at another planet, but as your question stated, how unfinished IS unfinished. =o)
