Star Wars Game Music...

Err... right I think some of the original music from X-Wing Alliance and the original Jedi Knight games are cool and want to have happy lives in my HD where I can listen to them.

I've established how to get at the .GOB file containers, and extract the files I think i'm after (Nar Shaddaa the Vertical City chiefly...) but how do I convert them to WAV format?

X-Wing Alliance is even more confussing, the music scores are in .IMC format; so i'm utterly stumped here. In particular I like the background music in the family transport with Wee-Gee or what ever he's called infront of you.

Any advice oh kind people?

What file format are he tracks in after you've extracted them from the .gof files?

I'm at a loss for the X-Wing Alliance files. It almost sounds as though LucasArts created their own file type to store the music tracs, perhaps for copyright protection.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Well inside the .gob container there's a few but I reckon it's reasonably obvious that .cog files with names like 'doorshutting' must be ingame sound effects... which sort of leaves us with narshaddaa.jkl.

.jkl  jediknightlevel :?:

Which sadly leads me to realize your final point is perhaps correct.

YOu could always try the desperate technique. plug a recorder on the line out. start the game and just record the music.

Annoyingly, the game doesn't want to work on my current elderly machine these days...

However, my mate who lives in China was around today (plus noisy five year old daughter), and reckons a Linux program called magic might be able to identify what the music formats are... and he just happens to have a linux disc with him (but not on him!) soo when he pops round again in a day or so we might just be able to identify it using the disk in my E-drive..

While the desperation technique of re-recording the music would work, it is only to be used as a very last resort, when all else has failed. I will ask around, and see what I can come up with. Hopefully, some of the people I know will have a program for such a task.

Unless, of course, GL is as paranoid about copyright protection as we know he is, and has encoded the music in a way that it cant be copied.

I once knew a great man. Nothing got to him, and he always smiled. May he forever rest in peace, knowing fully well that his freinds shall remember him.

XWA had music adobted from the SW albums. You're probably looking for original track by LA. (perhaps I have what you need)

The music i'm looking for is associated wth Kyle Guitar when he's rushing around Nar Shaddaa... I think...

8O No clue Dude. Start whistle some part of it...

Umm...errr... Part of this is just my feline sense of curiosity not being able to achieve a result. I can't recall it from the original movies, so I guess it's exclusive to the game. I kinda wanted to replace some stuff in Rebellion with it. If I drink enough tonight which is unlikely i'll record me whistling and send it to you...

If you are SOOOOOOOOOO desperate i could record it for you.

Suddenly M78 appeared and made me all happy. I'll have a look at the ingame movies with smacker and see if I can pin point something.... :)

If you're looking for a certain track from Jedi Knight or MOTOS, it should be farely simple. You can simply insert those into any CD player and it will play the music, so they can't be to oddly formatted. You might also want to take a look at Masters of Terakasi (sp?) for the PS. I know you could also play that in a CD player, so it might have the track you're looking for.

Thank you dude! It is just completely beyond me why I dodn't think of this about...errr... three years ago when I first thought of this.

Guys, you can listen to the ingame music simply by inserting the disk into your stereo system. And if you were curious, about the second track is what I was after.

Excellent.[/url]

Jedi Knight? Isn't that just remixed OT score?

If you want to just listen to it I think a normal CD player will do.

 Don't you hate being ignored?

:? Sorry dude! Missed this one.

Aw, right. They were normal cd tracks * smacking my head on the table *

Well, with a free tool, like cdEx, you can copy the tracks from your original cd to the harddrive and even encode them to mp3 files, so they won't take up that much space. As long as you keep the files to yourself, I don't think anyone will bother

*also smacking head on table*

What I find amazing is that the tracks you can play were obviously original to Jedi Knight, but also obviously the work of a proper orchestra! How many other Star Wars game, or even non-sw games go to such lengths!

Nice link Mask! I'm going to see if I can crack X-Wing Alliance music files now; which doesn't work in a normal CD player! :)

Is there some utility or prog to extract XWA music files into Mp3 or something that can be played in any media player?

Thanks

Sure, I used ScummRev.

Uh, wait, it seems like it's been dropped off. I've a copy of it and also the entire XWA soundtrack in MP3

I asked him to send that prog to me, once I have it I'll send it into your direction J, and of course to anyone else who's interested.
