There´s a guy who is called an artist and who is living just a couple of meters from my house away, where he also has got his workshop. There are lots of sculptures stored of which you can´t be sure what it looks like. I never considered to call that arts and never believed that there´s anybody who buys his stuff. But yesterday I´ve read the newspapers and it looks like that this guy and his team won a competition for ice-sculptures in Colorado. Of course with an abstract sculpture, while others rather tended to build elephant-heads and other nicer things. :?

The sculpture is called "bridge of tolerance" and shows a bridge of my town which leads over the rhine to france:

Call me ignorant, but I just could recognise that it´s a bridge after I´ve read it. :?

I have never liked abstract art (except for a few exceptions). I just find it outrageous for people to pay millions for something that looks like it took an hour (or less) to make!

So I suppose Banksy is an artist, too, yay

If everyone painted/sculpted elephants/horses/etc. it would get boring pretty fast. Besides cute animal heads and human figurines limit the artist in what he can express with his art.

Btw. bridge isn't just that thing connecting opposite sides of a river, but it's also a symbol of connection between two (possibly different) people and cultures. This might be what this guy had in mind.

Poor animal!

So it´s that easy to do something artsy, call it a bridge and name it with some words like "freedom" or "tolerance" and everybody will like it and you will receive a price?!:?

The catch is in that "everybody will like it" part. You have to be really good in order to receive anything.

I checked the original article at badische-zeitung.de and it seems that the competition was a bit tricky. They had to create a sculpture from an ice cube in a given time. They proved that they can do that with great skill and unlike the others dared to create something more, something with a symbolic meaning (and imho quite good looking too).

The point is that creating something abstract doesn't mean one is not able to create something photorealistic. Look at Pablo Picasso for example 8O do you think he couldn't draw a simple portrait?

Well I don´t doubt that for a second.

So, Moribundus, also german tongued? I´m impressed. :)

I just wonder how these guys practiced all the time, though thanks to global warming it´s not that cold here anymore. It´s even two years ago since we had snow. :?

Haha, no, that was mainly work of the miraculous Babel fish :-) Atlough I learned german at grammar school, I forgot almost everything, so without a dictionary I can't put together a single correct sentence :(

Yeah, snow is rare here too, and even if we have some few days a year, it's not enough to make a simple snowman, not to mention a buffalo or elephant. Perhaps they had some training tours to the Alps.

However it must be very depressing to watch all those sculptures melt away after the competition :(

For once i have some pictures to show.

Here is a background I am working on for a fan film. Its supposed to be the outside of a hangar in the lower areas of Coronet city.

lol- nice use of quotes there, Eagle.

Impressive looking, Mad. That's at a bare minimum video game-quality 3D, and for one person that's most impressive. :P

If I wouldn´t have used quotes, though no knowledge about Mad´s budget for that film, you could have thought that there would be someone like George Clooney or Edward Norton playing a role in it, instead of just his mates. ;)

What a beautiful tiger!

Did you shot these photos, Jahled?

They are both photomashes. The photographer of the Golden-headed lion tamarin with a Meerkat's face is a professional photographer who normally does war-zones like Iraq but gave us (ZSL) a discount because he likes working with wildlife as a medium when he's not working with the army. The bottom piccy I simply found on a google image search for 'swimming' and added the duck, with some cloning of the water and some added Impact-Photoshop filter refelection :)

Ah yes, the leaked Colbert/ Tod Lockwood pic. I heard there was some huge legal issue regarding it's comission so it was leaked to the online comunity since it otherwise would never have appeared.

EDIT: Right, it was made for a trading card game but was rejected.

EDIT2: I keep forgetting that the edit button is at the bottom now.

A light Escort Cruiser design built by Damorian Manufacturing Corporation based on their much earlier Carrack Cruiser. At 365m in length it is only slightly larger than it's older cousin but does spupport a launch bay with room for two full starfighter squadrons. The ship suffers from reduced speed compared to the Carrack but has noticeably more powerful shields and retains the Carrack's formidible weapons.
