It's not really art, but... I'm working on something that will eventually look like this. I have the shield blank now and just have to get to painting, and then add the metal boss over the center.

I also have another one in the works, but that one's going to take much longer since I'm starting from even less. I have to still cover it with linen, build the forward and rear spines, paint, and then attach the boss. :roll:

Why shouldn´t that be art? Would be nice if you could post an image of it when your done. If it looks like that shield on the pic, than it will look really cool. 8O

Hopefully I'll have them completed by November. I'll post some pics along the way.

Is there a set of instructions on how to make a Roman shield like that? I'm taking Latin II this year, and I can always use a project for extra credit/the Latin fair.

Yeah, there is, though it's not particularly easy. This webpage has a good guide. In fact, that whole site is worth a look.

Tofu, you may want to consider making a less complicated shield (called scutum, p. scuta). Check out some of the designs on this site. I specifically suggest one of the flat designs rather than the curved ones, since the curved ones will require another whole process of construction. On the other hand, the flat designs are essentially--and for all intents and purposes--pieces of plywood covered in linen and painted over. That first link I provided will tell you how to build the grade-A best, most accurate version, but let me say something: despite all my ranting about accuracy and such, I doubt I'll be making one that accurate. Looks authentic is close enough for me. I really don't want to delve into the whether one should use milk paint or latex, much less which brand of milk paint is "more accurate" than the next. :roll:

If you're interested, Tofu, and if some other members are, make a new thread and I can give you some guidance and descriptions on the various types of shields, as well as their eras and paint designs, along with anything else. Otherwise, just email or Facebook me. :)

For those looking forward to bioshock - they've created a nifty art book for the game (two versions, 75mb (currently downloading) and a smaller 15mb)

A word of warning though, they have stated that there are spoilers in the pdf - so be careful reading it if you're looking forward to this awesome game.

This is certainly not artwork, but for someone who lacks a great many skills in the ways of the computer, Internet, and HTML, it's something to be proud of! Gents and ladies, I present to you the first website I have ever created, and all done with little to no knowledge of anything computer-savvy, the website of the Third Cohort of the Sixth Legion (Ferrata) of Rome!

I am most proud of the Handbook for Late Republican Legionaries, the first of its kind to cover this particular era. It lacks pictures, needs expansions, and generally a lot more work, but it's a start, and I am quite pleased with it!

Be sure to give comments and feedback! :D:D

It looks pretty neat SOCL. I like the Romulus and Remus statue in the corner. Is it more geared towards outsiders who are seeking information or for people who are already members of your unit?

Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Dark Side!

Nicely done, mate! When I have less homework (Like on the weekend or something) I'll actually take the time to click on more than three links. :P

Thanks for the feedback, gents! :D

I tried to make it user-friendly for both experienced users, but detailed enough that it makes sense to new users. Certainly the intent is to recruit new members (from all over the Atlantic Coast)--indeed, the web is the best way to get our name out there, sometimes even better than events!--but I tried to fill it with the sort of information needed for experienced reenactors who have never done a Late Republican Roman legionary impression.

What did you use to make it?
Tripod/Lycos.

ROFL!!! :lol::lol:

Nice one, Jahled! :lol:

Edit:

@SOCL

That´s maybe interesting for you. It´s a gallery of a roman-festival which just took place near Basel, Switzerland. It looks like that it took place at the Augusta Raurica, the remnants of an old roman settlement, which has been destroyed by my forefathers, the Alemanni. 8O:? And no, I wasn´t there, because I didn´t knew about it. :(

Interesting festival... It looks like they may have used helmets and equipment based off of Gladiator, though. Some of the fellows, specifically the officers, have correctly-constructed replicas. Not sure what to make of the bikini girls. :roll: Romans didn't like public nudity or near-nudity very much.

Not trying to be a critical, it just comes naturally.

Nice photos, though! :)

EDIT: If you're interested, my buddy made up this video on YouTube. It includes a shot of me with a trident taking down a gladiator who's almost twice my size.

Maybe they were rather alemanni-girls than roman. Otherwise it´s very hot at the current here. ;):mrgreen:

BTW

Nice Vid. :)

I dunno if anyone noticed, but Eagle was awesome enough to buff up my avatar. Kudos!
Hmm...this makes me think a title should be put in place for Eagle. Perhaps not a direct part of the BEAK Imperium, if at all, but a title of some sort is required for his many assistances in avatars and all-things animated...

Time I will need to ponder this.
