Look what I just found on the website of a computer mag, that I always buy. It seems like an employee of Microsoft itself, or a subcontractor, used pirated software to generate a few sound files, that you can find on every pc with a newly installed Windows XP.

You can find the translation of the article here. Btw, "weiter" means "next page"

Well, what is there more to say than  and of course

It reminded me of an old German saying "Those, who cry too loud about a thing are the worst of all"

You can still open the Windows editor though, drag one of these files into it and scroll down to the bottom, like the article says. There you should find this name, among lots of gibberish ascii characters.

Have to try that myself, actually 8)

As a software pirate myself, I have just this to say. I dont blame him.

I refuse to pay the amount of money companies normally want for their software. The proces are generally way to steep. Microsoft products especially.

I once knew a great man. Nothing got to him, and he always smiled. May he forever rest in peace, knowing fully well that his freinds shall remember him.

While I can't blame the average Joe (no, not the guy on TV) for not wanting to shell out the cash for these programs, the company owned by the $50,000,000,000 Man should be able to spend $400 on an audio program. This just puts their complaining about "pirates" taking off with their programs in a new light. I personally use an "illegal" copy of XP Professional, but only because I refuse to pay $400 for an operating system I need to run my computer. Well, that and my friend did pay for the OS, so I'm not really breaking the law.

Shame on Microsoft, or the person they hired to do the sounds!

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Very nice! Microsith has its very own illegal operation!

For the rest of it guys: I personally don't mind you guys telling the world what software you use but remember this is a public website... As SWR, we neither endorse nor condone software piracy.

Yup, forgot to add that.

LaForge, I tried all nine files with UltraEdit and all of them had it (German XP Pro). Now, if they had to recall all of their sold Windows cds and give out clean versions, that would be just a first step.

Another would be to settle the legal issues. Since they proclaim their importance so much, I'm sure they will have no objections about this

My bet is that Microsith can expect an inquiry from Sony or one of its lawyers in shich they ask this matter be clarified!

I sometimes use pirated software but try to not use too much and intend tov in the end buy most of those programs i have on my pc that are illegal.

I must say most people are not really on to pay 3000$ for the latest 3ds Max. But at least discreet thought about that by releasing gmax. But anyway most of software market is overpriced.

UPDATE !

Microsith have released an official statement as a reaction to these events. They claim, and this is where it gets confusing, that during the development of these files there were some placeholder infos, that had accidentally not been overwritten by the final version.

The also state, that they'd solely use licensed software and they'll work refining their work processes, so that these kind of mistakes will never happen again.

Ok, here are the two things, that I don't buy with this:

1) the name below should be a placeholder ? What, do they claim now, that they program the soundfiles, rather than recording and editing them ?

2) if and that's a big if, the name was indeed a placeholder, isn't it a bit of a huge coincidence, that the name used is identical to that of an apparently "famous" cracker, who used to release cracks for the very program used to create these sound files ?

A cynical person might say, that they are just waving around with one hand to distract everyone, while the other one is working frantically on cleaning up this mess.

I'm so glad I haven't turned into a cynic over the years :lol:

1. Is there a link to the new story?

2. Is there a link to Microsoft's official statement?

3. What's a placeholder?

Why can't they simply admit, apologise to Sony and try and repair the problems.

 Seriously?

That will never happen. Microsoft and Sony are the deadliest enemies!

Well, because simply admitting could simply cost them several million dollars... Edited by Scathane

Scath, sure. But since it's in German, I didn't post it yet.

3) that's a temporary thing. Like when blue harvest became ROTJ

Thanx, Mask! I still don't understand what a placeholder is, though... :?
Posted

It's the same, 'cause it's a common description through every programming language.

Scath, let's try this approach. Say, you're writing a new program, but don't know, how a certain button should be named.

Then you just insert a temporary name, which is a placeholder, until you insert the text, that you want to have in the final version.

And even if it really was a placeholder that mentioned DeepZone, why on earth would Microsith use a known warez distributor as a placeholder?! Lame excuse on their part... Edited by Scathane
