Shields, a pressurized cockpit, a hyperdrive, a good balance of things like speed, ruggedness and maneuverability, plus an astromech to repair things and talk to on long missions...what more could a Star Wars fighter pilot want?

 

oh, wait, forgot to mention the ejection seat.

Well when I'm playing multiplayer with XWA (Which happens very rarely.) I favor the Tie Interceptor. I can still live without the shields, course its the pilot that counts.

 

I know its not officially part of Star Wars because its part fo my ST vs SW Fan Fiction, but a few Rapora Assault Starfighters would whipe (and did) whipe out a couple squadrons of X-wings... For details read the ST vs SW Fanfiction topic.

The foot warmer is far more important that shield are, I mean, you fly better if your feet relax, problem is you can't handle the rudder while warming your feet.

 

You can live without shields, in a short-range 1-1 the TIE Int kicks all the Rebels craft but the A-Wing...

Of course it all depends on the pilot, but when we're talking about pilots with a similar skill level, shields make all the diffrence.
