igorimp Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 You know that feeling (about day 600+) when you become so dominant that the enemy can't do anything about it... and you build your 23 Imperial Star Destroyer and just can't think of a name for it? Well, I have a very delicate system of naming ships. All big ships get a prefix based on class (by system from TIE fighter) and a serious name (ie. ISD Crusher for an Imperial Star Destroyer). But, after a certain time, I just can't name my freighters and transports any more, so they either get numerical names ("IE-60" - Internet Explorer 6) or get crazy names. So, I was wondering what are your favorite crazy ship names. Here are my inputs: Almost Evil - Carrack CruiserTwisted Laugh - Victory-IIGarbagebox - Escort CarrierVery Evil Lady - Strike CruiserClueless - Dreadnaught (very late in the game)Panda Freedom - Calamari CruiserMobile Target No. 1 - Bulk Cruiser (late in the game)Bothan's Nose - any old RebelSpace Invader 1 - First in a series of Assault TransportsWookiee Ride Express 1 - First Rebel transport in a series and, of course, when I get bored with that, I just start making movie star named ships (mostly female - they're ships after all) like (transport) TRN Carrie Fisher... That's NOT sick. Is it? There is only one life; There is only one truth; There is only one EMPEROR'S GRAND PLAN. By the way, the Emperor's not dead... he's just resting...
Trejiuvanat Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 It is sick, but it's fun. Suddenly you have your might powerful fleet filled with names like: Inexorable, Implacable, Furious, Intimidator, and suddenly they find themselves joined by: Kill'em all, Here I come, Oops, Vader's Express. Eventually joined by some names in Spanish or even German... http://www.swrebellion.com/~jahled/Trej/banner.gif
Texas_Fett Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 I know I've mentioned him a few times (and he's even posted here once or twice), but the last time I played with Valkir, he grew frustrated with the sheer number of Rebel starfighters I was throwing at him. So he started cranking out Lancer Frigates left and right, naming them things like "Roach Motel", "Raid", "Black Flag", "Orkin", "Exterminator", etc. He had some funny names for the escort vessels assigned to his SSD, too. Hmm...I'll have to pick his brain to recall what they were, though. Five of the Greatest Lines in the Star Wars Trilogy -"As you wish..."-"He's no good to me dead..."-"What if he doesn't survive? Trejiuvanat Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 Silly names are the easiest to come up with. I remeber using Zoot's Paw as Zoot's flagship, when I used a Zoot card I made... http://www.swrebellion.com/~jahled/Trej/banner.gif
Texas_Fett Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 I remember once where I had started naming Escort Carriers after US Naval Aircraft Carriers, such as the "Lexington" (docked in the Corpus Christi, Texas bay, btw), the "Intrepid", etc. Well, it ended up where I was naming ships after colonial America towns and adding an adjective (Boston's Vengeance, etc.). However, I started running out of suitably 'cool' names, so I consulted an atlas and began using truly odd names, like the "Sheboigan", the "Chapaquaddick", and the "Muesebach". Things rapidly deteriorated from there. Five of the Greatest Lines in the Star Wars Trilogy -"As you wish..."-"He's no good to me dead..."-"What if he doesn't survive? Texas_Fett Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 Nah, they'd just want to take the design for their own, contract it out, and then cancel it in a 'cost cutting' move after billions of $ has been spent on it. igorimp Posted April 1, 2004 Author Posted April 1, 2004 Weird Al songs? Never considered that option. Bulk Cruisers Ugly Girl and the Beer Song sound nice. Also, liked the Fraiser names (Cruiser Niles ). Well, hope Victory Destroyer Vader's Feet doesn't smell. I also have a tendency to name ships according to the system/sector they were build in. It's not really funny, but it could be a very bad thing in multiplayer where my enemy could see a ship named "Made in Bespin". Gives a preatty big hint about shipyards there... There is only one life; There is only one truth; There is only one EMPEROR'S GRAND PLAN. By the way, the Emperor's not dead... he's just resting...
the_mask Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 But you could also use that to your advantage Nothing like waiting with a big 'surprise fleet' http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/5183/animated9pn.gifhttp://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1778/reloadedbannerdu8.gifhttp://www.swrebellion.com/images/banners/rebellionbanner02or6.gif
Texas_Fett Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 That might work, but personally I'd be expecting a trap right off the bat. I'd send a heavy spec forces team to investigate the system first, and then sabotage a few shipyards and/or a defending capital ship or two before blindly jumping in-system. I'd also jump to a friendly or neutral system nearby first, minimizing the likelyhood that they'd have advance warning of my arrival. My favorite tactic is to rename ships in construction by increasing or decreasing their number. For example, "Nebulon-B Frigate 2" may become "Nebulon-B Frigate 6" if I want my opponent to think that I have a much larger fleet than I really do. Conversely, if I have a large fleet and want to lure my opponent into making a misjudgement of my fleet strength, "Nebulon-B Frigate 12" may become "Nebulon-B Frigate 5". I've also made it a point to select 3-4 ships of the same class, put them in different sectors, and cycle 3-6 names amongst them every 10-20 days. It confuses your opponent into thinking that you have more ships than you really have, and that you're moving them around more than you really are. Five of the Greatest Lines in the Star Wars Trilogy -"As you wish..."-"He's no good to me dead..."-"What if he doesn't survive? He's worth a lot to me."-"Put Captain Solo in the Cargo Hold"-"AaaaaAAaaaaaa!!" Fett's VetteThe Lyrics
igorimp Posted April 1, 2004 Author Posted April 1, 2004 That's a great idea! It can also be used very deviously. Let say you build a single Lancer Frigate at about day 300, rename it Lancer Frigate 23 and parade across enemy space. The Rebel thinks you've got lots of them and ignores building fighters to build more Bulk Cruisers - when, in fact, what you did build are 8 Imperial Star Destroyers that easily take their Bulks to pieces... Now, THAT'S just plain evil! There is only one life; There is only one truth; There is only one EMPEROR'S GRAND PLAN. By the way, the Emperor's not dead... he's just resting...
