Hey all! Long time no see! It's been an interesting decade on my side to be sure, but I have very, very, very slowly been updating Rebellion 2. I had initially written some stuff in Java but given the age of the code and my growth as an engineer over the years (I initially started working on it while a Junior in college) I decided to start again using Unity:

	https://github.com/davidadas/rebellion2

Sadly, I did this before we all discovered that the company behind Unity is untrustworthy, but such is life. I am continuing to work on this as I can, though as stated in the README, it may never be completed. Unfortunately, it's hard to make room with a full time job, kids, dogs, a house, etc to take care of .

That said, I have recently started working on the missions and events for the game. For now, I'm just trying to emulate the original as much as possible. We can always change it later. Few questions on that though, if anyone happens to know offhand...

How is mission success calculated? It's not clear how probabilities are determined/how multiple participants affect the outcome. The original game was vague as hell on that topic.

How is mission failure (i.e. 'Mission Foiled') calculated? Also, what factors determine whether it ends in capture, death, etc?

Are there any factors which reduce the chance of success/failure? For instance, are assassination missions tougher on planets with officers (e.g. Han Solo) stationed there?

What's the probability for Jedi Discovery? Also, what, if anything, affects that (e.g. Jedi Level, certain mission types, etc)?

Are mission lengths randomized or are they calculated? I never honestly could tell.

Any help here would be great. I have other questions, but let's start there!

I have yet to find a good answer here or Google so, how does bombardment strength compare to planetary shields value? How many Y-wings of (bombardment = 2) does it take to get through a Gen Core I (Shield strength = 40)? Has anyone tested or done the math? I thought it was 21 Y-wings (bombardment total = 42, 20 to get through the shileds of 40 and one more fore Gen Core I bombard defense of 2)

While I've managed to get it to work, it doesn't work very well graphically. All the pictures and icons are upside down and the colors look as though they are reversed. Has anyone experienced something similar on WIN8 or WIN7 x64? I've tried compatibility modes, making changes to the registry, and altering graphic card settings but it always looks wrong. I followed the instructions for the Vista x64/WIN7 install from this forum multiple times with no success. Anyone with any ideas would be great, I really want to make this work without having to dual boot XP or something like that on my new laptop.

Problems using model importer

I'm trying to get the model importer to work, but I can't figure it out. I've followed the instructions given by "the Mask," and tried numerous other trouble shooting techniques suggested by other users on SWR, including manually inputing model .bin and .x files through Resource Hacker, yet nothing seems to be working. My computer is vista 32 bit, if that makes any difference. Here's an example of what happens when I try using model importer, and also when I manually input models via Resource Hacker:

With model importer, say I want to import the Viscount ship from the SWR website- I copy the file info into my import file (all .bin and .x files included in the download at once), making sure to adjust close.x, medium.x, and far.x if they are listed differently, run "rmodimp_win", and a number of different things happen:

- a blank dos window opens briefly and closes and I am taken to the selection of models from which I am to replace an original; after clicking the ship I wish to replace, a window pops up with the following message: "Replacement complete !" and below that it says to check the "_logfile.txt" if there were any problems.

-or, for example, when trying to upload the winged mc80 model, the dos window stays open and I am prompted to select from the following: "Archive: ./import/winged_mc80.rmd replace ./import/mc80a_f.bin? [y]es, [n]o, [A]ll, [N]one, [r]ename:" From here I can continue to click "y" for each of the prompts and an "inflating" message will follow ("inflating: ./import/mc80a_m.bin") for all the .bin and .x files (I get an error message with the first of the .x files- "error: cannot create ./import/readme.chm"), or "A" to automatically select all. Either way, the box for model replacement appears, I select the model I wish to replace, the replacement complete message appears, and yet there is no new model in RebEd or in the game itself.

- and finally, when I attempt to manually input the data through Resource Hacker, I can't save the updated info to TACTICAL.DLL- an error message appears saying that the .dll file can't be overwritten.

The rmodimp.txt is set at the following: "location=..\tactical.dll

saveas=..\tactical.dll"

If anyone has any suggestions, I would really like to try the game with these other models. I've tried everything I know to do. Thanks.

Rebellion on STEAM, GOG, and Origin

Was hoping to post this back in May when there was a sale on. Managed to grab it for less than $2.

In its default state the SWR Steam version is capable of running on a machine using Windows 10, 64 bit. I had serious concerns that it would not be compatible but it runs fine.

It does suffer from the occasional crash to desktop, but this only seemed to happen past day 1000. As long as you're saving every 100 days or so it wasn't a major issue.

RebEd does work with it, though it seems to increase the chances of game crash slightly.

Using the site I was finally able to get rebellion working on my machine, I don't have space/windows key to run it on a VM so I went with the older Refresh method. After messing around for an hour or so I couldn't get the game to work. I had gotten it set up but when launching I got a black screen. Following some additional threads I found Mithious' guide for setting up Rebellion. I finally found what the problem was. I had copied all the files over as is, keeping the files in the rebellion folder, as he clearly says not to below. However, from the other directions this wasn't clear. It would be great if someone could make an official sticky post including these directions below. As soon as I realized my error I copied the files out of the rebellion folder and into the main Star Wars Rebellion folder and the game started up no problem. An official post with THESE directions would go a long way to making it easier for less savvy Rebellion fans to get set up and running (on Windows 7 x64 anyway). Perhaps this is the case somewhere, but if it is then it's not clear enough. I'm talking like a link in big letters on the main page or something, you know. I launched the game and YES, it seemed to work. I got all the way to the Shuttle Startup scene, and thats where I noticed it, all the icons are upsides down. With the emperor's throne effect that becomes 300. At this leadership I discovered a subtle yet intriguing effect. Actually the rebels had attacked Coruscant. With their @!&*ed fighters they blew away my star destroyer and with no planetary defenses I was literally caught with my pants down! So they assaulted me and I'd forgot to assign a general. Five of my six stormies and a few army regs were slaughtered. Now the way the AI assaults you is once per day. Then it repeats the next day. So I decided to take a look at what was left. One measly stormtrooper regiment. After that his highness was off to boot camp. And then I saw Thrawn sitting around doing nothing. I had nothing to lose so I made him general. Now the troop stats are the same as vanilla rebellion both for the rebels and the imps. Next turn general Thrawn's leadership proved so effective that an entire buttload of assaulting troops met their maker. I mean five rebel armies and three fleet regs were pulverized by a measly storm reg. Now that's quality leadership. Like I said there were no system defenses other than the lone stormy. Then the rebels repeated this stunt again and again, every time attacking with 8+ regs and the lone stormy duked it out and lived to tell the tale. I didn't have any training facilities and wasn't in a position to train more troops. I actually lasted 200+ days as the rebels relentlessly assaulted Coruscant to no avail. Bless that Thrawn and his outstanding leadership.
