While viewing, you can tweak various lighting parameters to see how the asset holds up in various lighting conditions.

• Use File > Open to open an .ALO file that you wish to view.

• The model will be loaded and shown in the main display.

• The red, green and blue lines indicate the X, Y and Z axis, respectively.

• Drag the left mouse button to rotate the camera around the model and drag the right mouse button, or use the mouse wheel, to zoom in and out.

To the left is a list of models and particles that are related to the model.

• Expand the model's node to show all animation for the model.

• Select an animation to play it, looping. A slider below the list appears that allows you to speed up or slow down the animation and disable looping.

• At the top, below the menu are the play and stop button for controlling the animation.

• Expand the "Bones" node in a model's node and select a bone to see the orientation of that bone.

When opening more models, note that the old models remain in the list. There is no way to close opened models, apart from closing the Asset Viewer

Particle Editor

The Particle Editor is a powerful editor that enables you to develop, debug and preview particle systems. You use it by setting up emitters that emit particles defined by a rich set of plugins that modify the various properties of those particles independently. A set of simulation options are available to preview how the particle system would look in game. Particle systems are, for instance, explosions, weapons fire, halos, fire, sparks, splashes, radiation and much more.

A particle is composed of two separate parts: an emitter and a particle. The emitter is the source of the particle, there can be multiple particles within a single emitter.

• Upon opening the Particle Editor four windows open up, only three are accessible.

• The main window contains a side panel on the left containing your particles and emitters.

• The simulation window allows particles to be played with various time and color settings.

• The third and most important window is the Particle Plugin Settings.

• These various settings cause different particles to emerge.

GUI Editor

The GUI editor, combined with the GUI Lua files enables you to completely reprogram the GUI. Every button, textfield, slider, window, dialog can be changed, removed or added to. The GUI Lua files contain the code that makes your creations in the GUI Editor come to life. With it, you can completely redesign every faction's interface, add buttons to control your special units, add new menus in the main menu, and so on. A GUI file (.BUI) is a hierarchy of UI elements such as buttons, lists, sliders, lines, quads, and so on, where each element has certain properties.

• Start a new UI scene with File > New, accepting the default size of 1024x768. The game scales it to fit the actual resolution.

• The Tools tab contains a button for each UI element type that you can add.

• Use the Selection tool to modify placed elements.

• To create an element, click its button and drag its outline in the scene window. It is now added in the hierarchy (under the TreeView tab).

• When you have an UI element selected, the Properties tab will allow you to change its properties, both type-specific and common to all element types. For instance, for the Quad element you can change the color of each corner, the overall opacity and texture of the quad, its rotation and position and how it reacts to changes in aspect ratio such as stretch and alignment.

Since the scene is just a description of layout and design of the UI elements, it must be linked to a Lua file to give the placed elements functionality.

• To do this, select the root scene object in the hierarchy, and use the Lua Script > New button to select the Lua file that defines the behavior for this scene. The lua file has access to every element in the file by its name and can show/hide them and trap various mouse and keyboard events.

• Check existing Lua files in the Scripts\GUI directory for examples.

Lua Debugger

The Lua Debugger is an application that allows you to, as the name says, debug the Luas files as they are executed by the game. The program connects to the game and once connected, all debug output by Luas executed by the game are shown in the debugger. This tool is invaluable if a set of Lua files do not behave properly and you can't figure out why from just looking at the code.

• Select File > Connect to connect the debugger to the game.

• The debugger will then show a list of all loaded Lua files in the right window and the debug output from those scripts in the bottom window.

• Ensure that all scripts are in the mod's Data\Script directory, even those that you did not change, as the debugger will try to load them.

• Double-clicking a file in the right list will open it in the main window, with syntax highlighting, where you can edit and save the Lua file.

• Debug output is generated by scripts calling the DebugMessage function with a string parameter. The debug output window also shows other run-time errors such as calling undefined functions.

Data Miner

The Data Miner offers modders the ability to extract various bits of information from the game's XML files. Use it to compare unit statistics or other properties. This will make balancing units in your mod a piece of cake.

• Place DataMiner.exe in the XML folder of your mod then place DataMinerXRef.xml in the root folder of your mod and start DataMiner.xml.

• The Data Miner will query for the location of DataMinerDataFiles.xml in your mod's XML folder. It will use that file to open all (relevant) XML files in your mod.

• Once done (there may be some errors), you get a list of the XML files in the main window where you can inspect and edit (by right-clicking) the nodes in those XMLs. In this way, the DataMiner is like a visual XML editor.

• You can use the bottom interface on the main window to search for text in the XMLs or gather information from the XMLs and display them in a table.

• Use the For Each and Clear buttons to create a list of nodes you wish the DataMiner to traverse.

• In the bottom list you can add a list of attributes (Add Attr) and nodes (Add) whose content you want from each traversed node.

• After making you selection, click Make Table to get the resulting table, where each column corresponds to a line in the bottom list and each row corresponds to an XML item traversed by the rules in the list above it.

3D Studio Max 9 exporter plugin

Max 9 exporter is a pretty self explaining tool. It is Autodesk 3d max 9 plugin that allows 3d max 9 to export to .alo and .ala for models and animations. Exporting to .alo and .ala means that models exported from 3d max 9 can used in Universe at War. FX shader source are all the Universe at War shaders source files. For coders who know HLSL, the can modify Petroglyph's shaders and tweak them for ZedGraph.dll, Scintilla Control, DataMarksAPI are files used by Petroglyph's mod tools. ZedGraph.dll is used by the particle editor. Scintilla Control and DatamarksAPI files are used by Lua debugger. Without these files, Petroglyph tools will not run properly.

Terrain Editor

The Terrain Editor (aka Map Editor) allows the creation of single and multiplayer maps for in game use.

• After selecting the size and type of map you wish to create (Note: the settings are adjustable within the map editor), a mapper must absolutely become familiar with is the tools tab.

• Within the tools tab there are 4 selections: Texture View, Height View, Scene View, Object View. These 4 views are what are necessary to build all maps.

• The Texture view contains a black box containing smaller black boxes. Each small black block can load a texture and bump map. When selected the texture will apply itself where you mouse click onto the map; this is how you give maps multiple textures so they do not look so bland.

• The Heights View allows the user to creates hills, cliffs, ledges and various other things requiring different height using various brushes and height settings.

• The Scenes view allows the user to adjust the settings of the map. This is where you add a skydome, sunlight, and different weather patterns.

• The Object View provides a list of objects divided by categories in a hierarchal tree. These objects are props, faction units, and markers.

• Markers are used to place starting locations and various other things such as triggers. If you have used the Empire at War map editor, most of this editor should seem familiar with the exception of 3 new sections specific for Universe at War's editor: Citiscape, Tracks, and Animation.

In order to delete a custom map go to the CustomMaps folder where your game is installed. The standard path is:

C: > Program Files > Sega > Universe At War Earth Assault > Data > CustomMaps

Delete the .tga and .ted files.

On game restart, the map will be gone.

Creating a mod

To create a mod, create a folder in the game's directory (e.g., HumanMod) that will contain your entire mod. All files that you change or add go into the mod, at their respective directories:

• XMLs go into Data\XML

• Luas go into Data\Scripts

• Models and animations (.alo and .ala) go into Data\Art\Models

• Textures go into Data\Art\Textures

• Shaders go into Data\Art\Shaders\

• GUI files (.bui) go into Data\GUI

To run your mod, start the game with the --MODPATH=HumanMod argument. You can do this by creating a shortcut to LaunchUAW.exe, modify the shortcut and place --MODPATH=HumanMod behind the current target. The game will look in your mod directory for any files it wants, before looking in its own game files.

Important:

In order for the GUI Editor and Particle Editor to work, you will have to extract Textures.meg into Art\Textures\DDS. Note: NOT in the Data\Art\... directory. ParticleEditor.exe and ParticleEditorPrefs.xml have to be moved to a subdirectory (name doesn't matter) before they can find all their assets.

5 years Anniversary for Petroglyph

Damn I'm slipping.........I've been hanging around PF too much and forgot .

Well Petroglyph just had a 5 years Anniversary 4 days ago (from this posting time) and is still celebrating it

Re: EaW Community

I'm exploring what to do with PFF, given that Petroglyph's official forums have sucked all the activity and other mod teams have their own sites now.

So here's my inquiry to you guys:

What EaW sites do you frequent? Not only are they working on the original Ages of Star Wars mod, and their expansion Honour and Corruption, they have recently announced their machinima project, titled Soldiers of the Republic.

There have been a number of new Mod releases over at EAWFiles. Check them out here:

http://empireatwar.filefront.com/

Soldiers of the Republic is a Knights of the Old Republic Machinima. It follows a squad of Republic soldiers from training to battle. The series is about to start its first season. More information can be found on their website, http://www.aoswmod.com/hub/news.php.

I interviewed several of the Ages of Star Wars team members, including Kalo, MSEagle2 and Codeuser.

Freno

Okay guys, so today I'm interviewing the Ages of Star Wars mod team on their new expansion mod, Honour and Corruption.

So first of all, let me ask: What IS Honour and Corruption?

MSEagle2

Honour and Corruption is an expansion for our Jedi Civil War project. As of now, it plans on implementing two additional factions that will enhance the gameplay and will greatly improve the diversity and provide a much more intensive gameplay experience.

Freno

What inspired you to do another expansion mod, along with your new machinima, Soldier of the Republic?

Codeuser

HaC is our FoC rendition of JCW with new gameplay factors that will improve the experience. If we simply moved the mod to FoC, then we'd be abandoning the people who do not have FoC.

Kalo

Well, One was the fact that FoC Definitely adds some new elements of gameplay, That indeed fit in for our Factions, Zann Consortium's Corrupt is GREAT for the Exchange, But we didn't want to leave EaW Behind, That would betray our fanbase, SotR was started to expand our fanbase, As well as include the fans a BIT more than we have been.

MSEagle2

We decided to start Soldiers of the Republic for many reasons. we wanted to expand to more types of entertainment and we wanted to create a funny, enjoyable kotor based show that would tell a different side of what we are use to seeing in star wars.

Freno

So, will HaC feature any new units that are not featured in the original mod?

Kalo

HaC will add the Mandalorian Faction as well as the Exchange faction for the human player to command, so obviously a lot of new units. There will also be new units for the republic and the sith in HaC, that are not featured in JCW such as the Sith having the Dark Reaper.

Freno

So where did the idea of SotR come from? A machinima project is a massive undertaking, how did you come up with the idea to use a game like Halo in this way?

MSEagle2

SotR came from just wanting to do a machinima for some time. Sure it could be considered an undertaking, but the end "product" is worth it all. We decided to use kotor era for a few reasons. We felt that clone wars are too commonly used for any star wars related project right now, and GCW has been around for 30 years. KotOR is something relatively new, and there are a lot of opportunities with the KotOR era. We decided to use halo as the game engine to produce the series because we felt it would be the most moddable game for the things we need to implement, to make it star wars.

Freno

So in a nutshell, how would you describe the team's progress on your current mods so far?

Kalo

Well, its good model-wise! But currently, we are looking for riggers, coders and mappers. (Feel free to apply ; )) But aside from that, we are doing very well.

Kind of hectic, but well on our way.

Freno

Well, that's all we've time for today, I'll let you guys get back to your projects...

Kalo

Alright, Be sure to visit the Forums and Apply

MSEagle2

or just come by and say hi to us at our forums

The Age of Star Wars forums may be found here - http://www.aoswmod.com/Forums/

Modding Shorts

The Dawn of Victory Mod Team has moved to Sins of a Solar empire. Follow it up here - http://www.eawpr.net/

---------------

V: Strategy Corner – 1v1 Space Techniques

Zaknaril

The key in a 1v1 space game is to control the credit flow of the map. Each map differs because of mine placement and size, but controlling the mines is always important. The first 5 minutes of a game will determine the winner about 75% of the time.

A smart player builds fighters right away (along with upgrades for the fighters) and sends them to each of the neutral mines (mines not located close to a base). The goal is to capture some, and contend for the rest. Just don't let the enemy get them. I usually watch the map and drop an extra fighter squadron in about the time the first one is about dead. You also want to contend for any turrets that may be strategically placed around a mine. Just one turret can keep a mine relatively safe.

If this is going well, a logical next step is to attack the mines your opponent most likely has in control. The base mine(s) can be vulnerable on many maps from a well-planned bomber strike. One lone fighter snuck in behind enemy lines can allow for a few squadrons of bombers to be dropped in. A tip here is to drop the bombers above the target you wish to destroy; they will always go straight down and hit the target (as opposed to flying around the target like they do if you drop them to the side of it).

Map control is crucial. A rule I have lived by is "the first player to end up on the defensive will lose the game". You want to make sure it's not you. Take as many mines as you can and keep the rest away from your opponent. Once you have a majority of the mines (say maybe 3 of 5 on the map) it is safe to upgrade. During the upgrade is the time to do you mine upgrades, and prepare to support your units left on the map. Once the upgrade is done you will want to shore up your controlled areas and then prepare for the finale. Don't be concerned if your opponent upgrades before you do. If you took out his mines as you should have (with him upgrading there shouldn't have been much resistance) then he won't have any money to take advantage of it.

Get your fleet built up and take him out. It's really pretty simple. Now, I know you are probably thinking "but what if it isn't that simple and we are both tech level 2 and fighting it out?" Micromanaging your units is key here. Be sure that when your units engage the enemy that you target specific hardpoints on your enemy ships. If your opponent is Rebel you will want to destroy the front two turbolaser hardpoints on his Nebulons first off. Those are the ones that do the most damage. If your opponent is Empire, attack the rear turbolasers on the wings of the Acclamator (again, they are the ones that do the most damage) and then the front laser cannons. With Consortium just take out the missile tube of the Interceptor (thereby nullifying it's special ability). Believe it or not, micromanaging your units properly will allow your units to outlast your opponents. Even in a dead even match you will win.

VI: Community Interview: Ghostly Substance

Raiden

Welcome to the Community Member Interview for this Months Community Newsletter

Today we are interviewing one of the long term members of the Petroglyph Community, Ghostly Substance.

1: So First Question. What First Drew you to the Petroglyph Community?

I was looking for a new Star Wars RTS and I came across this Gamespot article about a new EAW game. At first I ignored it since it looked too simple but more screenshots were later added so I went onto Lucsarts Forums to check it out. I tried to learn more about this new Star Wars game that I even came across a link to Cain's PFF (Forums). I got Bex who is still making the "Gundam [G] RX-79" and a "Mangella Assault Tank" which are ground units. I'm still trying to find modders to help me make units so that I can at least get one release out of it and skinners to help lift the pressure off of Bex's texturing skills and other mod projects. Having a little problems lifting off the ground is the current status.

5: As a long term member of the community, and an experienced gamer to boot, what are your thoughts on Universe at War?

It looks promising and sure to add some kick-(censored) gameplay. Alien vs alien action while us humans try to defend ourselves on our own planet. A lot of potential for it to be a great game. New units, new ways to use them, new way to harvest resources, and Franks kick-(censored) music sure makes this a most wanted game to play. Should easily be top 3 in First place, Oh and able to destroy your surroundings, that's a plus

Cool, Thanks for answering these Questions. Of course, im not really a console fan myself but from what I got to see of it at the summit it looked easy enough. Also the demo will be released on X-Box live in the coming weeks.

For more info and to discuss the news click here: http://pff.swrebellion.com/index.php?topic=4264.0

WIN A PS3

http://www.petroglyphgames.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2742

Yup you heard it, its time to bust out the Corruption Skills in Star Wars Empire at War: Forces of Corruption, which will pit players against each other in epic battles for a PS3 and 3 PS3 games!

Sponsored by the: US Air Force w00t! smile.gif

Tournament starts: April 2nd - May 25!

Read more info at Gamespy

TO ALL WHO LOG ON BUT NOT POST.

PLEASE POST THINGS WE NEED YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER.
